It’s Not Too Late for Your Disaster Recovery Plan


With the August 2017 double landfall of Hurricane Harvey, many businesses are re-evaluating Disaster Recovery plans and how to keep their company productive with employees scattered and offices closed. Creating a Business Continuity Plan can seem daunting so Server@Work has put together a 5 part plan for IT Disaster Recovery. By tackling these 5 areas, you can ensure your technology resources will be available to support you during an event.

Backup to the Cloud

If you are not already sending your data to the cloud, do not be alarmed. There are plenty of options to get you backed up quickly including sending USB drives or backups to cloud data centers and having them “seed” your data to get you started. A disaster recovery plan should also include an on-site BDR appliance for local backups, faster restores, and the ability to “spin up” locally crashed servers and workstations.

Cloud Servers

When an office or geographic location goes dark, you will need a place to restore your data. Private cloud servers in dry secure data centers are the best option. Why a data center? They will have the power, Internet backup, and security needed to guarantee the physical safety and availability of your data.

It is not necessary for your business to purchase your own servers to stage and manage in a Co-Location data center. Working through a Managed Services Provider you can have a fully available cloud server solution with your live backups ready for your business.

Remote Access

With employees evacuated to friends and family, you now require a remote access solution for employees to connect to your cloud servers and be able to work. A solution such as Citrix will offer Windows Virtual Desktops to your team. These Internet accessible desktops can be fully loaded with your applications and will have direct access to your programs and data just like you do in your office.

While the cost and management of a remote access solution may seem daunting, working with your Managed Services Provider you should have options through them for monthly remote access terms through Citrix as well as the benefit of having your MSP fully manage your remote access solution.

Bring Your Own Device

With the low cost of portable computers most, if not all, of your employees will have a personal Internet-capable device such as a laptop or tablet.

Cloud servers + Internet + Citrix VDI = Fully Functional Business

Using their personal device, they can access your Citrix virtual desktops in your private managed cloud. With the desktops, they will be able to perform normal job functions and keep your business moving smoothly during a disaster.

Support Desk

The icing on the cake is your support desk. Most Managed Service Providers are consolidated in the same impacted area as their clients. This makes it convenient for service delivery but during an emergency, your MSP may be offline as they deal with the same business challenges as your business.

When available, choose an IT Provider with local and geographically dispersed resources who are able to continue to provide the IT services your business requires during a Disaster Recovery.
